يدرك باتمان وغوردون أنه إذا عرف الناس حقيقة جرائم هارفي، فسوف يفقدون الأمل في القانون وتعم الفوضى. لذلك يقرر باتمان:
تحمل مسؤولية جرائم هارفي (ليظل هارفي بطلاً في نظر الناس).
يطلب من غوردون مطاردته كـ "مجرم".
يتم تدمير "إشارة باتمان" (Bat-Signal).
ينتهي الفيلم وباتمان يهرب في الظلام، ملاحقاً من الكلاب والشرطة. يصفه غوردون بأنه ليس البطل الذي تحتاجه غوثام الآن، بل هو الحامي الصامت، والمراقب الساهر... إنه "فارس الظلام".
